Bad, bad server. No donut for you! - Remembering ORKUT

Well, years & years back I must say that there were days in my life when I was practically ready to give donuts or even Zillion dollar lobster Frittatas to get Orkut up & running.

The concept of Orkut was so new & fresh then. We took to Orkut like fish to water. We took no time in adding  into our day to day lives; scraps, communities, fans!, profile pictures, testimonials, our very first social, professional & personal profiles..., profile visitors and every teensy bit of thing that Orkut had to offer.

Orkut was our primary school of social networking. With the passage of time the Alma Mater saw her wards move on...leaving behind countless scraps, pictures & migrating to upper-primary, high-school & universities of networking. Somewhere along the way we forgot her, but now we've been rudely jolted back to her memory by her own creators who have now slated her decommissioning on Sept. 30 2014.

"Like a patient etherized upon a table", Orkut waits... overwhelmed, as minds challenge memory limits and delve out the long forgotten passwords to pay that last visit, to scavenge what is left... to preserve what remains, for posterity to ponder upon -- remnants of the first ever platform that threw us all headlong into the inviting waters of 'social networking'...that which wasn't even called 'social networking' then...

'Decommissioning' is an evil word indeed.
And as we prepare to part with Orkut,
To scrap the memories forever
Into the archived scrapbook of our hearts,
We also prepare to shed for the very first time,
A layer of our ancient skin of virtual immortality
We'd thought we had attained forever.
We'd thought was ours forever to keep.

Sparing now that has never been spared in years...
A little time for Orkut.

Farewell.

Thank you Orkut...We owe you an era.

  2. I'd written this when Google released the decommissioning date. Just re-visiting as the life-support system expires today. Felt nostalgic thinking back to when Orkut was in her teens...

Read urs Anita. Loved it. I've shared my thoughts :)
